League of Immortals Induction

Hot off the DVD release of the documentary King of Kong A Fistful of Quarters, Steve Wiebe's feud with Billy Mitchell is still gaining momentum and notoriety after talk of making Wiebe's story into a scripted movie. Not to mention Wiebe is still trying to top Billy Mitchell's high score in Donkey Kong.

So why should Wiebe be inducted into the League of Immortals? No matter the naturally gifted man worked for a lot of the things in his life. No matter he became a middle school science teacher. No, but because he is a Donkey Kong champion.

After watching King of Kong again I decided to see how hard it really is to play Donkey Kong. I downloaded it onto my Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console and started on it. In the film, Billy Mitchell, "gamer of our generation," said the average game in Donkey Kong doesn't even last a minute. I lasted about 30 seconds before I spent my three lives. I ended up with but a couple thousand points. Then I compared my scores to Wiebe's - 1, 049,100. It takes mad skill to do what he and Mitchell do. But since Mitchell comes across as a complete jackass in the documentary, he doesn't deserve to be inducted into this hallowed hall of fame.

The man overcame adversity and mind games to set a new Donkey Kong high score both live and taped before being beaten by Mitchell once again. Apparently when Billy Mitchell topped the high score he did it in front of a few mortgage brokers and without an official Twin Galaxies referee. Sounds suspicious to me. And it should to you too if you've seen this film. So as Wiebe continues to try to top Mitchell's 1,050,200 score, he can rest easy because he is in an elite league. He is now in the League of Immortals.

League of Immortals Induction

Dallas had been abuzz over the likely Super Bowl berth of the 2007 Dallas Cowboys, but Gates and I never really understood how people could think that. Anyone who's watched the team this season knows they've had flashes of brilliance but were never great like the Patriots. The Cowboys squeaked through some really crappy games against some really crappy teams and when they finished the year like they did with losses to Philadelphia and Washington, it was only a matter of time before they lost to New York. The Giants were 8-1 on the road this season (the loss was at Texas Stadium) and they were peaking at a time when the Cowboys were slumping. The one thing I know I'll take away from Sunday was the greatest postgame press conference from Terrell Owens. I've had a lot of fun mimicking his crying and muttering support for his teammate Tony Romo but Owens worked his ass off to get back into shape for the game after suffering a high ankle sprain a few weeks ago. Sprains aren't fun, I know. I can only imagine how much grit TO played with Sunday as he was still recovering from the injury. And unlike the previous TO incarnations, he defended Tony Romo and told everyone the burden of the loss should be put on the entire team's shoulders. Nice to see this new TO.

"It's unfair...it's just unfair. He's my teammate.....He's my quarterback."

League of Immortals Induction

Seeing as how it's the early hours of Thursday now, I was thinking this blog needs some kind of heroes list, much like a hall of fame. I'll call it the League of Immortals.

Without further ado...

The first inductee into the League of Immortals has been in the public eye for decades now and is constantly known for some interviews that go a little too far. Recently he interviewed a blond bombshell who proved she is nothing more than that - a shell. The interview sparked lots of tension which just made for even better TV. So please join me in welcoming the first member into the League of Immortals...

David Letterman ... hee hee!

So here's why Letterman's Friday interview with Paris Hilton has him inducted into the League of Immortals (formatted the Letterman way):

10. "Have your friends treated you differently since you've been out of the slammer?"

9. "You know that was horrible. And you know they locked up your friend Nicole..."

8. He helps Paris realize she doesn't want to get scurvy.

7. He chugs Paris Hilton's new fragrance.

6. He makes Paris Hilton sad...

5. ...then he offers to buy her a parakeet.

4. "Tell us now, looking back, looking back on that experience, what have we learned? What can you tell us? What's different about you going forward ... as you look back?"

3. She tells Dave, "I've moved on with my life and I don't want to talk about it anymore." Then Dave quips, "Well this is where you and I are different - because this is ALL I want to talk about."

2. Dave to Paris: "What is it you did? Do you know what you did?"

and the number 1 reason he was inducted based on his interview:

1. Paris gets love from one of the guys in the crowd: "I love you Paris!" Then she looks over and says, "Love you too..." and blows a kiss to the guy. Dave starts smiling and asks, "Somebody you met in prison?"

All hail to the king of late night: David Letterman.
